Catamaran cruise Lisbon: party boats, sunset music and what to expect
Last reviewed
What is a catamaran cruise like in Lisbon?
Lisbon catamarans divide into two types: sailing catamarans (20–30 pax, relaxed, wine included, €35–45 per person) and motor catamaran party boats (50–80 pax, DJ or live music, open bar, €25–40 per person). Both depart mostly from Doca de Belém in the late afternoon for 2-hour sunset trips.
Catamarans are the most social boats on the Tagus. Their wide deck, stable ride and open layout make them ideal for groups — which is exactly why operators have turned the catamaran sunset cruise into Lisbon’s most popular pre-dinner activity. Done right, it is a genuinely good evening. Done wrong (wrong boat, wrong expectations), it is 90 minutes of overcrowded deck and mediocre music.
This guide tells you which is which.
Two completely different experiences under one name
The word “catamaran” covers a spectrum from intimate sailing cat to floating nightclub, and booking platforms often list both under the same category. Know which one you’re getting.
Sailing catamaran (20–30 passengers) A genuine sailing vessel with two hulls, sails and usually a motor for departure and docking. Quieter, more atmospheric, better for conversation. Music tends to be background rather than central. Wine, sparkling or beer included. Price: €35–45 per person.
Book a sunset catamaran with welcome drinkMotor catamaran party cruise (50–80 passengers) A large powered catamaran designed for groups. Open bar (usually 1.5–2 hours), DJ set or live music (Afrobeats, Latin and commercial electronic are common), large dance area on deck. Louder, more social, and more energetic. Price: €25–40 per person. The sunset boat party with DJ and open bar is the most popular version.
Book the sunset boat party with DJ and open barThe mojito catamaran is a middle ground — a large sailing catamaran that keeps a somewhat party atmosphere with cocktail focus but at lower volume than the full party boat.
Book the mojito sunset catamaranWho each type suits
Sailing catamaran (relaxed) Best for: couples, small groups of friends, travellers who want the sunset experience without noise, people who get overwhelmed in crowds. Ages: tends to attract 25–50 year olds, families with older children (12+).
Party catamaran Best for: birthday groups, hen/stag parties, solo travellers who want to meet people, groups of friends (20s–30s), anyone whose priority is a fun social evening rather than scenery. Note: if you are not interested in dancing or meeting strangers, this is the wrong choice.
What happens on a typical catamaran cruise
45 minutes before departure: Check-in at the pontoon (they call it a dock or pier in communications — it’s the same thing). Crew does a safety briefing as you cast off.
First 30 minutes: Heading downriver past Belém Tower, under the 25 de Abril bridge, toward the Cristo Rei statue. On party boats the bar opens immediately. On sailing catamarans you are usually handed your first drink on departure.
Central section (30–45 minutes): The boat slows near the middle of the estuary for the main view and the peak sunset light. This is the photo moment. On party boats the music peaks here. On sailing catamarans this is the quiet moment — engines off, sails filling if there’s wind.
Return (30–40 minutes): Back to the departure point with views of the Belém waterfront lit in warm light. Drinks continue.
Arrival: Back at Doca de Belém, usually timed to finish 30–40 minutes after sunset. From Belém you can take tram 15E back to central Lisbon or head to a restaurant along the Belém waterfront.
The spacious yacht option
Some operators market a “spacious yacht” or “luxury catamaran” — these are typically 15–20 metre sailing catamarans that take 20–30 passengers, fall between the party boat and the intimate sailboat, and often include a more generous drinks package.
Book the sunset cruise on a spacious yacht with drinksThese tend to attract a slightly older demographic (30–55) and are a good choice when you want more social energy than a 10-person sailboat but less noise than a full party catamaran.
Private catamaran charters
For groups of 10–18, a private catamaran charter gives you the full boat for a fixed price (€500–700 for 2 hours is typical in 2026). You choose the playlist, the drinks, the timing and can bring your own food. Most operators allow this.
Key advantage over booking multiple individual tickets: the per-person cost becomes similar once you have 10+ people, and you control everything.
See the private boat guide for more detail on private charter rates and how to negotiate with operators.
Practical information
Duration: Most sunset catamarans run 2 hours. Party boats sometimes run 2.5 hours (listed as such in their booking descriptions).
Departure point: Doca de Belém in the vast majority of cases. Confirm your specific pontoon in the booking confirmation — the marina has multiple entry points and the correct one is not obvious on first visit.
What to bring: Light jacket for the return leg when it gets cool. Flat shoes (required on any boat — heels are a genuine safety risk on wet fiberglass decks). Camera or phone. Any medication if you’re prone to motion sickness (though the Tagus is very calm).
What not to bring: Heavy bags, large camera equipment, or anything you’d be upset losing to a wave splash from the bow. The bow of a catamaran moving at speed gets wet.
Is the open bar really open?: Yes — on party catamaran cruises the bar is genuinely open for the duration (typically beer, wine, spirits, and soft drinks). The quality of spirits is not premium but it is unlimited. On “welcome drink” catamarans you typically get 1–2 drinks and pay for additional ones at around €5–8 each.
Booking and timing
Best months: June–September for party atmosphere. April–May and October for sunset light without the full summer crowds.
How far ahead: Party catamarans fill 3–5 days ahead in July–August. Sailing catamarans (smaller) need 5–7 days ahead in peak season.
Cancellation: Operators typically cancel in winds above 25–30 knots (legitimately unsafe). You’ll usually be notified 2–3 hours before departure with a refund or reschedule option.
Combination tickets: Some hop-on-hop-off bus operators include a river cruise in their 48 or 72-hour ticket. The quality is variable — usually a motor catamaran with 1 drink, not a party boat. Fine if you’re already buying the bus ticket.
Getting there and after
Getting to Doca de Belém from central Lisbon: Tram 15E from Praça da Figueira (stop “Belém”, 40 min, €1.50 with Viva Viagem) or Uber/Bolt (15–20 min, €8–12). If you’re coming from the Alfama, the direct Uber is cleaner than navigating tram connections.
After the cruise: Belém has several restaurants along the waterfront. Vela Latina at the marina does solid fish. Further along, the Pastéis de Belém bakery is still open until 11 pm and worth the queue for freshly baked custard tarts. For a proper dinner in Belém, book ahead — it fills up in summer. Alternatively, take the tram back to Cais do Sodré for the Pink Street bar scene if the party mood continues.
